How to Build a Shed

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

By Keith Kingston The easiest way to build a shed in the backyard is to make a trip to the local Lowe’s or other hardware shop to purchase a shed-building kit. Never choose one from a picture in a brochure or from the Internet. When viewing in person, you can check for important quality control details such as thickness of timber, overlap structure of panels, type of wood, whether it is pre-treated with a preservative and the quality of flooring. Thick timber is longer lasting. An overlap structure on wall panels is important to prevent water leakage. It is beneficial for the shed to have been pre-treated with preservative, but in your upkeep you will still want to treat it once a year. Flooring should be thick so that it does not give with the weight of tools and equipment you want to store. Do not skimp on size or quality, because in the long run, you will be happiest with a large, lasting building. Before starting, make sure you have a level base on which to build the shed. Otherwise, the wall panels will not line up properly. Double check that you have all necessary building tools for the particular shed-building kit; you will not want to stop mid-project to purchase more tools. Find out if you need permission to erect a small building on your property. Detail an access route for getting large panels and other materials to the site for the shed. To begin, make sure the land is dry. Excavate a place to put in a concrete floor. If you choose to make the shed above ground, then wood boards are acceptable. Follow instructions and proceed to screw all pieces together in the pre-made holes. Run a frame sealing mastic around windows to prevent weather damage. T o insulate, either use glass fiber loft insulation or expanded polystyrene slabs covered with wallboards. If the shed needs electrical wiring, be sure to bury cables in the ground or run them high overhead. Wires should never drag along the ground, wall or fence. Call a professional electrician for assistance if you are not familiar with these procedures. It is possible to build a shed without purchasing the kit. Keep in mind that you are essentially building a box. Begin with the same flooring process- either excavate for a concrete floor or use a wooden floor. A simple shed can take the shape of a lean-to with one large slanted wall nailed to three smaller side walls. If you feel confident in your building abilities, then a more complicated shed would be a four-sided rectangular shed with a pitched roof. To attach the roof, nail the slanted slabs of wood to the upright walls. To finish the project, apply a preservative treatment, and any insulation or electric wiring that is desired. How To Protect Your Crown Jewels With A Confidentiality Agreement

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Martin Truman How should you use a confidentiality agreement to protect your trade secrets and how effective are they anyway? Many commercial clients still regard a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-disclosure agreement (NDA) as routine documents that do not require detailed consideration or legal advice. Are you one of them? They are all the same arent they? I must have seen and reviewed several hundred Non-disclosure Agreements in my 11 years in commercial practice. NDAs vary from a half page statement through to a comprehensive 8-10 page document. Usually a two to three pager, or possibly a concisely drafted and formatted one page document, will meet most needs. 80-90% of the clauses will be the same in all agreements and can be scanned quickly when you know what you are looking for; but the 10-20% unique clauses are the ones to watch out for. It is usually these that have the potential to catch you out. What type of information? For what purpose is it being disclosed. How sensitive is the information? What is the upside? What is the downside? What is the shelf-life of the confidential information? What practical methods are there of securing the confidential nature of the information? Can the obligation be enforced on employees, advisers, holding companies or subsidiaries? Who bothers suing for breach of an Confidentiality Agreement? Arent they just symbolic? There is a widely held belief (which I have some sympathy for) is that the mere presentation of an NDA at the outset of a relationship is more important than the signature itself. Asking the other party to sign an Confidentiality Agreement is a good to way to set the mindset of the recipient. Often this has the desired effect of putting the recipient on notice and reinforcing the duty of care that is then owed to keep the information confidential. The usual remedy for unauthorised disclosure is an injunction preventing the recipient from disclosing the confidential information. Admittedly the costs of obtaining an injunction may outweigh the benefit of securing one. Once the information is in the public domain it is difficult to persuade a judge to grant an injunction. The remedy then is damages. Ive got better things to spend my time on than negotiating or obtaining a written agreement? To a practised eye a review of a draft Confidentiality Agreement neednt take that long. A good commercial lawyer should be able to identify the 10-20% and advise of any tweaks that may be required. If your bargaining power is weak, you will at least sign with knowledge of the consequences. The author is Martin Truman, head of commercial law firm, Truelegal Solicitors. Table for Two by the Lake of Fire, Please: Part 2

Monday, December 17th, 2007

By Linda Leon It was utter despair that pulled the trigger that fateful day. It was a day in which for whatever reason there was no hope. Not even the thought of his family or what his loss would do to his family was not enough to cause him to cry out for help, or perhaps he did cry out for help and no one would listen. Perhaps they were all like Jobs friends that came to watch him suffer and judge him. Its amazing how friends will stand around and watch you drown. But what I did not realize is that family will do that too until God revealed more of the book. Job said this of himself, Did I not weep for him that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the poor? When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light there came darkness. Concerning his degree of ministry he said, I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widows heart to sing for joy. He was a good man in the midst of the worst most degrading trial of his life and no one was there to help him. His friends can to inspect his misery and see him suffer so that they would have something to talk about. You know the one, Did you hear what happened to so and so, oh poor thing. But where was his family. I did not know that he even had one until the last chapter of the book! At least his friends showed up, but his family oh my God! Job we would rather not have to watch you suffer because then you might ask us for help and we really dont want to do that because we have our own problems. The least we know about the situation the better, please dont inform us Job. Because if you let us in on your pain and we dont help or help grudgingly the conviction of God would be more than we wish to bear. We will just simply turn our backs, and close our eyes. Hopefully your problem will go away soon and we wont have to deal with it. Trust me, I had to live this portion of Jobs story to understand it, and what God revealed was more precious than gold and it has helped me to endure the pain of their callousness and forgive them too. Jobs family had enough to help, but when he needed it, they did not make it available. After God got finished rebuking Jobs friends for hardness of their hearts and he turned the captivity of Job around, this tiny scripture in the last chapter is inserted that is extremely potent to this story. And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. THEN came unto him all his brethren and all his sisters and all that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an ear ring of gold. So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. . . Did you catch that? They came after the storm and brought him gold and money. Thats messed up. That is just totally messed up. Yet, Job did not even worry about their actions; he let them all come over to his house for dinner. Oh God, Job was an amazing man. Lord help me to be like him in how he chose to deal with those that hurt him. Only God knew and had complete confidence in Job and knew that he would survive the ordeal. If you are in the worst trial of your life like Job was, dont despair God has utter confidence in you. You will make it. One more thing, dont you dare miss this line, they comforted him over all the evil that THE LORD brought upon him. This one messes with peoples religious philosophy, but God is careful about the words he has written in his book and he wanted for all eternity for the world to know that he takes full accountability for what happened to Job. God let it be known in the first chapters that Job was an innocent victim and that he had moved against him without cause. He is sovereign. He is in control and he is in command. Satan was powerless to attack Job unless God had given him permission. God said to Satan, have you considered Job and Satan said, how can I you have a hedge around him. If God gives permission it is for a higher purpose that we will never understand until we have gotten through the trial. Hold on to that. Hang on to God no matter what. Rev. How NOT to fix Your Wife (Girlfriend or Date)!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

By Steve Roberts Men are dense… in relationships. Men, I know this isn’t going to be a popular statement, but you know that it is true in many ways. We may state that women are not understandable, that they don’t make sense, they are not logical, or that the particular one we’re with is worse than all the others. But, the truth is, we’re dullards when it comes to the deeper realities of relationships. There are exceptions, but not very many. For instance, my expertise as a marriage and family therapist is relationships. But I can tell you that any woman coming into my office knows more in her little finger innately about relationships than I do. Women have been raised on them. When they come out of the womb they know that physiologically they are just like momma. So, they try to be even more like her. That’s a relational way to grow up. Little boys come out of the womb and right away know there is a really big difference between them and momma. And then culture says, “Go out and find yourself. Find out who you really are like.” This sends us toward a non-relational way of growing up. So, men, let’s face it, we’re playing catch-up with women all the way when it comes to the subtleties of making a good marriage, partnership, or dating relationship. We just don’t “get it” where and when we should. And here is the rubber meets the road point of this article: We don’t get it about “fixing” women. We have grown up fixing things. And we also want to fix our mate’s problems because that’s what we think we’re good at. Unfortunately, women don’t need to be fixed, they need to be listened to, and then they can go fix things just fine themselves. (Men, read that line again!) The way I get around this with men is that I teach them that “listening is fixing.” It’s simply a matter of redefining what we think fixing is in this context. Remember, “Listening is fixing.” OK, easy to say, not so easy to do. Here’s how my wife taught me NOT to fix her. One day she started saying to me, “This is not helpful to me.” Note, that this is a very functional “I” statement. No blaming, no finger pointing, and not inflammatory. Just a simple statement about her reality and she left it at that. What did I do? I immediately started arguing with her, saying that, indeed, this WAS helpful to her. At this point she merely said, “And THIS is not helpful to me,” and turned and walked away. She was very self-composed and non-reactive. This pattern continued a while (I don’t want to confess how long) until it started to dawn on me that I really did want to be helpful to her, and since I apparently wasn’t being helpful, maybe I ought to ask her what would be. This is where I learned about listening to women! She taught me that “Listening is fixing!” That’s all she needed, just to be heard, and then she could go on and do whatever she needed herself. She just needed the embrace of the relationship. I’ve just given you the condensed version. It actually took quite a long time for me to really “get it,” and I still fall into the old pattern, lo, these many years later. Pam merely says, “This is not helpful to me,” and I now catch on fairly quickly. Instead of arguing, I have learned to ask, “What would be more helpful right now?” Then she gets to tell me what she wants or needs from me. Men, we’re dense, and we’ve got alot to learn. Women, you already know it, but men are dense and have alot to learn. You can help the process or hinder it, by how you educate the men in your lives. We need to know what you want and need at any given time. My wife’s self-possession, self-restraint and willingness to educate me is an example of how to do so effectively. Just don’t think it works the very first time! Steve Roberts is an experienced Marriage and Family Therapist who shares tips and real life relationship secretsfrom over 20 years of practice. Alternatives to Your Debt Consolidation

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Quentin Gibbens Most of the people in the world struggle financially. The most common reasons that attribute to financial difficulty are debt and the inability to save money. It is much easier to obtain a credit card from any registered financial institution, as it is to buy a cellular phone contract. The result is that people do not have a cash safety net to protect them when the economic climate becomes less favorable. Fact of the matter is that when the primary financial institutions raise interest rates, everything becomes more expensive and your debt due also increases. The result is that you have even less money for yourself. What can you do to get out of this vicious debt cycle? Getting a second job might seem feasible, but it is not necessarily the best option. The reason for this is that although you will generate an extra income, you will have to work more hours during your 24-hour day and that means less time with your family and friends or those who matter the most to you. JOB is the acronym for Just Over Broke anyway. The other problem is that not all of us have the entrepreneurial instinct to see a niche in the market or to create a service or product that everyone else needs. You could learn to become an entrepreneur, but that takes time, patience and money. The last thing that a person in serious debt needs is to invest huge sums of money in business opportunities. People are reluctant to part with their money when they are short on cash, because they tend to become emotional. All of us experience emotions and it is part of life. Your emotions can result in you making a success of your current situation or to fail miserably. However, it is part of you and you need to make your own decisions. You could get assistance from other people, but at the end of the day you will have to take ownership of your own financial situation. Consider one of the following two options to become debt-free. Firstly, you can do the following:Cut up your credit cards and start paying the most expensive ones off.Following the first one, carry on paying the second and third one off. After you are debt-free, start to invest the amount you used to pay off your debts in a risk portfolio that suits your needs.Restrain from making debt again, because you will end up in the debt-cycle. Your most feasible option would be to only incur debt, such as your house and your car. Do not buy clothes, luxuries and entertainment on credit. Do your best to pay for these items cash and be on the watch out for sales and bargains. Secondly, you can think about starting your own business. An ideal business would be one that requires little capital. With the Internet there is such a huge market of consumers. You just need to determine a niche for a product or service in this market, learn how to market your product or service to as many people out there or you can invest in proven systems that were developed by people who embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship. Quentin Gibbens is an active marketer who loves to review new products and/or services that are available online and share it with interested consumers. How To Lose Fat The Right Way

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Andy Eaton How to lose fat is a combination of exercise and diet. Exercise will burn calories, and diet will reduce them. This combination will allow you to not only achieve your goals but to control and maintain your weight. One of the hardest things about trying to lose weight is actually keeping off those pounds, but if you exercise as well as control your diet you can be successful. There are many diets on the market and some of the most popular ones are the low carb diets. What does low carb mean? It means a diet low in carbohydrates. These diets will allow you to lose a substantial amount of fat, but when you complete them it is hard to maintain your weight, and you will find the pounds slipping back. In order to prevent this from happening it is good to couple your diet with an exercise routine. It does not have to be an extremely rigorous one just enough to keep you in good shape and prevent those pounds coming back. It is good to begin your exercise regime while you are dieting to ensure your success. You can then continue, even after you finish your diet. A better way to diet is simply to just change your eating habits permanently. Going on a natural diet will help you to lose fat and not worry so much about it coming back. A natural diet is simply one that cuts out junk food and refined foods. You will eat whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables and foods that are high in fiber. To ensure weight loss you will need to regulate your carbohydrate intake and be careful to cut out all trans fats. At first your body will take a few days to adapt and you may experience a little bloating and discomfort but this is only temporary. You will soon find your body adapts quite well and you will feel healthier. How to lose more fat? One of the simplest ways is to eat more fiber rich foods. These foods will fill you up and help your digestive system work well. This will result in your not being so hungry. Another good thing is that your metabolism will speed up when your digestive system works better. This is one of the easiest ways to reduce weight. You can also eat foods that help you burn more calories. Grapefruits are a well-known example of this. This is a nice way to start the day with a grapefruit, or a glass of grapefruit juice. Phentermine Side Effects

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Jimmy Sturo Although phentermine pills are oral suppressants that help in reducing weight, they must be taken only as part of a normal diet plan and not alone. Phentermine, when taken by itself for weight reduction, might cause severe side effects and complications and so the usage must be with caution only. Even when phentermine pills are taken along with a diet plan, there are side effects, such as dry mouth, insomnia, irritability, stomach upset or constipation until the body adjusts to the medication. These might disappear in time but it’s good practice to inform the physician if they persist for long. Diet, smoking, sleeping and alcohol habits need to be changed for the medicine to take effect as well as preventing side effects which could lead to severe complications. Before taking phentermine pills as part of diet consult your physician to discuss medical history as well as details and history of existing diseases and medications-even cold medicine. Phentermine is not recommended for children or pregnant women. Consulting a physician would eliminate any doubt regarding the use of Phentermine. There can be severe side effects such as chest pain, nervousness, pounding heart, difficulty urinating, mood changes, breathing difficulties or swelling are experienced during use of Phentermine, consult a physician immediately as this might indicate that the body is unable to adjust to the medication. The mood changes associated with phentermine are very similar to those associated with amphetemines, commonly known as “”speed”" or “”uppers”". They produce erratic behavior and manic bouts of energy and enthusiasm, but lead to major emotional crashes in many cases. Be up front with your physician about any side effects, no matter how trivial they may seem to you at the time. Bread Baking Made Easy

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Beth Scott Dont you just hate it when you follow a recipe to the letter and when the bread baking is finished the bread not only looks nothing like the recipe books picture, but tastes terrible as well? There is no denying that bread baking as with baking anything is a delicate process. Bread baking involves so many things that first time bakers are often discouraged after a few failed attempts to turn out professional looking and tasting loaves. Little do they realize that if they only possessed the professional Bakers secrets bread baking would be so easy that the bread would practically make itself! For instance: How many amateur bakers know the secret to keeping bread from sticking to the pan every time? None! So when they try their hand at bread baking for the first time their bread sticks to the bread pan, and ends up a crumbled mess if they try to force it out. Then they cry and give up thinking that the problem lies with them. The shocking truth is that it doesnt! The problem lies with their lack of knowledge of THE bakers bread baking secret. The secret professional chefs and bakers wont tell you, the secret they guard so jealously. My father happened to learn this bread baking secret in his younger baking days (which is no surprise since his great great grandfather was a chef for the White House and owned his own bakery) and has passed it on to his children ever since. Okay, okay, I know youre probably screaming at me by now Beth, get on with it! Tell us the bread baking secret already! So here it is; You will need only one tool besides for the oil and bread pan you already have, and that is quite simply cornmeal (you shouldnt need more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup for two loaves of bread). Cornmeal? you ask doubtfully. YES, cornmeal! No, you do not add the cornmeal to the bread ingredients! That is not the bread baking secret. What you do is you oil your pan as usual, and you lightly sprinkle cornmeal on all of the sides and bottom inside of the bread pan. Now you can safely place your bread dough into the pans without fear of it sticking to them. While your bread is baking, instead of sticking to the pan, your bread will stick to the cornmeal and slide easily out of the pan when done baking. You may need to use a butter knife and slide it in between the pan and the bread before turning the pan over and allowing your bread to pop out. A lot of the time this will be unnecessary however and your bread will pop out just by your turning the bread pan upside down. You will probably also want to use the butter knife to scrape the excess cornmeal off the bottom and sides of the bread as you may not care for the taste of cornmeal. This bread baking secret will work whether youre baking a batter bread or a rising bread (also called yeast bread). I personally use it for both. Here is another treasured bread baking secret, this one only for batter breads: On the last ten minutes of its baking time cover the bread pan containing the batter bread with another bread pan (a steel bread pan works best), and leave it on until the bread is finished baking. This will keep the batter bread from burning or becoming too hard on top. You may vary the time you leave the steel bread pan on according to how your batter bread usually looks when it is finished. If it is a very dark brown on top and difficult to slice because the top is so hard, then 20 minutes will work best. But if it is just a little too hard on top and a little too brown the 10 minutes should suffice. Do not cover the bread at all if it usually comes out golden and soft on top after the baking is completed. You may also glaze a batter bread on top with a tablespoon of melted butter mixed with a tablespoon of honey, and sprinkle some flaked coconut or sliced nuts on top of that. To glaze you start by taking the bread out of the oven five minutes before the required baking time is finished, then spread the butter/honey mixture on top of the bread, sprinkle on your coconut or chopped nuts and bake for the remaining 5 minutes. Here is another useful bread baking tip for rising breads: If your bread loaves over rise (say because you were busy and forgot about them), then you can use a pair of scissors to cut off the excess sides, being careful not to cut any dough from off of the top. You may then use this excess dough to make rolls. You simply oil a pizza or cookie sheet and form the dough into several small balls. Rise them for another half hour and then bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Do yourself a favor and put these tried and tested bread baking secrets immediately to use in your kitchen, and your family will rave over the results. Hot topic: Evangelicals Debate Global Warming

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Matthew Trumbull The atmosphere within the evangelical community has been heating up since the Evangelical Climate Initiative was introduced in early February. The statement, which is endorsed by more than 80 prominent evangelical leaders, asserts that climate change is an urgent problem and that the Christian faith mandates a strong response to global warming. Evangelicals have been reluctant to embrace environmental activism because of its connections with liberal agendas. The group as a whole has had a general tendency to prioritize spiritual rather than social and physical concerns. As scientific data increasingly supports observations of human-induced climate change, however, many are now taking action. It is a very appropriate move in terms of a biblical basis and, in fact, long overdue, said Fred Van Dyke, who teaches environmental ethics at Wheaton College. The evangelical community has long associated the environmental agenda with a liberal agenda, but they are getting over it. Roy Spencer, principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and former senior climate scientist with NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center, said he is concerned that the initiative focuses too strongly on activism and not enough on science. He helped the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance draft a 19-page monograph on global warming called An Examination of the Scientific, Ethical and Theological Implications of Climate Change Policy. The alliance is a coalition of religious leaders, scientists, academics and policy experts committed to applying a biblical view of stewardship to environmental issues. In the monograph, the alliance said that climate change science remains inconclusive. We cannot say for certain how much the planet may be warming, how much is due to human activities versus natural cycles, or whether these changes in global temperature would be mostly good or mostly bad for the majority of people, Spencer wrote in the monograph. Other prominent evangelical figures such as Focus on the Family chairman James Dobson, and Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries have also said they are concerned about the Evangelical Climate Initiatives stance on environmental policy. The media, in particular, has misrepresented the effort as the majority opinion among evangelicals, said Cal Beisner, an associate professor of historical theology and social ethics at Knox Theological Seminary and an adviser for the initiative. Because of this, he worked hard to discourage the 30-million member National Association of Evangelicals which has refrained from establishing an official statement on climate change from endorsing the initiative. What I would caution against is equating fidelity to the gospel of Jesus Christ with endorsement of a particular environmental scenario or policy response to it, said Beisner. I am concerned that the ECIs call to action hazards crossing the line in that regard. Despite their differences, ECI and the alliance both state that global warming is a problem that must be addressed, and both are motivated by a concern for those living in poverty. The tension is over the appropriate policy response. ECI urges preventative action and argues mandatory emissions reduction policy is necessary to combat the progress of global warming, which will have the most impact on the poor living in low-lying coastal regions. The alliance argues it is more prudent to invest in technology that will allow humanity to cope with a changed global climate. It also says mandatory emissions reduction policy will force a general increase in the prices of all goods and services that depend on energy as a production factor therefore, having the largest negative impact on the worlds poor Right now we have a government that has done nothing effective about global warming and doesnt listen to people like me scientists, said Mark Cane, professor of earth and climate science, and academic board member of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. They do listen to evangelicals, however, so [the Evangelical Climate Initiative] plays an important saving role. Matthew Trumbull is Web editor at Science & Theology News.
