By Lee Dobbins Although today there has been a boom in herbs and especially using Ayurvedic Herbs in Ayurvedic Medicine for treating illnesses is not new you will probably know that the tradition of using holistic methods has been used for centuries. Many of the herbs and spices that are used in Ayurvedic Medicine are ones that we normally have in our kitchen cabinets. Although these herbs do not originate here they have in fact traveled to us from India. Some of the more popular Ayurvedic Herbs which are used today include Cinnamon, ginger, Gotu Kola, Boswellia, Gymnema and East Indian Globe Thistle all of which can be easily found at your local grocery store or herbal medicine store today. Although Ginger is a common ingredient in many dishes that we eat it also has many medicinal uses as well. It is great as a digestive aid as well being great at helping treat colic, gas and to ease heartburn. However in India where it is known as Sunthi or Adrak is has been used as a tonic to enhance a persons vigor as well as an antidepressant. Gotu Kola is one of the most common herbs found in India and is great for healing wounds and dealing with skin disorders. Plus it is great for dealing with insomnia as well as being an aid to helping lower blood pressure. Gymnema Sylvestre (Gumar) is a herb which you will probably be hearing a lot more about as it can help to block sugar. It can also help to relieve the pain caused by toothache as well as being a great astringent and may help people who have rheumatism. The cinnamon essential oil who as great anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Dieting: Cut Confusion and Go for a Balanced Meal

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Recardo Gomes If youre confused about the calories to need to cut out of your diet to lose weight, then read on. But first lets get our concepts right. What is a calorie? It is a measure or unit of energy. If you say that a food contain 100 calories, this means that if the food is completely metabolized or burnt in the human body, 100 non-metric units or 420 metric units of energy will be released for use by the body. The body can use this energy for physical activity and for keeping the basic metabolic processes (digestion, breathing etc.) running. Your body may use the calories in the food to do daily work or just to provide energy for your body processes while you are sleeping. If you take in more energy in the form of calories than your body requires, that energy will be stored in the form of fat. If you take in less energy than your body requires, it will have to get some energy out of its storage depots and break down some fat to obtain the required energy, thus causing weight loss. How many calories should I eat if I want to slim down? Generally speaking, we need to reduce energy intake by 500 cal to lose between 0.5 and 1 kg per week a rate that will help to keep the weight you lose from being regained. An average, moderately active woman between the age of 18 and 50 needs 2,200 cal a day to maintain her weight. To lose weight, she needs to reduce her energy intake by 500 cal down to 1700 cal a day. An average, moderately active man between the age of 18 and 50 needs, 2900 cal to maintain his body weight. To reduce weight, an average man would have to reduce his energy intake by 500 cal down to 2400 calories a day. Is food x fattening? Many of us wonder about specific foods or beverages and whether they are fattening or not. The answer is: all foods and drinks are potentially fattening if consumed in excess. This means that even if you eat what many regard as good or healthy foods (e.g. Yoghurt, fruits, vegetables, vegetarian dishes etc.) and you eat so much that you push up your energy intake beyond your daily requirement, these good and healthy foods will still make you gain weight. The fact that a food or beverage has excellent nutritional properties does not mean it does not have the potential to make you fat if you overdo the intake. Conversely, many foods that have very high energy content, such as olive oil, are so nutritious that its a good idea to include them in your diet, but in moderate quantities. What are negative energy foods? The concept of negative energy foods and drinks is also cause for much confusion this theory is based on the fact that we use up some energy to digest foods and drink. Some foods have such a low energy content that we theoretically use up more energy than they contain to digest them. Thus, one can regard these foods as negative energy foods. Examples include lettuce, celery, tomatoes, cucumber, lemon juice, grapefruit, strawberries and other berries, cabbage, sugarless chewing gum and artificially-sweetened beverages. The problem is that people think that they can eat only these foods when they are trying to lose weight. No one can live on lettuce and tomatoes for days on end. This is a totally unbalanced diet and will result in variety of negative effects, including deficiencies, constipation, lack of energy, faintness and shakiness. The ironic thing is that if you try and lose weight by ingesting negative energy foods and artificially-sweetened drinks on their own, your body many react to this starvation regimen by shutting off its weight loss systems and you may stop losing weight altogether. Negative energy foods are excellent fillers when you are on a slimming diet. For example, having a large salad made up of these foods with cottage cheese and whole wheat bread will make a filling, low-fat, low-energy meal that will keep you satisfied for longer. The most important materials that come from the palm tree are coconut oils. Coconut and palm kernel oils were considered very good health oils in Ayurvedic medicine almost 4000 years ago. The Sanskrit medicine found out that the coconut oils had almost the same health effects like the mothers’s milk. It was thought that the human milk worked as some kind of antibiotic after an eye surgery. But latest research has shown that there is a similarity between coconut oil and human milk: their fat or lipid content. Knitting - My Passion

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Holly Burnham I always wanted to be good at something, no not just good, I wanted to excel. Everyone does, whether they admit it or not. Through the years Ive tried all the needle arts, painting, sewing, cooking, gardening. Once, and this is a secret..I tried to write a book. Knitting seems to be my niche. I get compliments on my knitting. I like getting compliments and so I knit more. My first few attempts were very sad. My sweet daughter once wore a sweater for an entire winter that, because I had run out of yarn and bought something close enough, had one sleeve a different pink than the rest of the sweater. My son wore mittens with the thumbs so misplaced his entire wrist was exposed to the snow and cold. I knit two ugly sweaters for friends of ours one Christmas and proudly wrapped and presented them. Understandably, I never saw them sport them. I am better now. I produce decent garments for my grandchildren. This current generation owes a lot to the previous one. I knit for pleasure..my pleasure, and that is a good thing. As I get older I clearly see its important to take care of yourself. Knitting takes care of me. I experience a soothing sensation as I pick up my needles and start fondling the yarn. I preen with pride when someone enthusiastically admires something Ive knitted for them. I enjoy the camaraderie of fellow needle clickers. I want you to learn to knit because I cant imagine life without this past time, but more importantly, I want you to find something that fills you with joy. I want you to find your individual passion. Humans are, by nature, creative beings. Our lives are so full we sometimes neglect to find time for our personal pursuits. In my opinion, the secret is to try anything that interests you. You will be good at some and fail at others. Somewhere in your heart is a passion you need to nurture. Holly Burnham is a self admitted yarn addict. The addiction will be life long and there is no hope of remission. Her constant knitting has put the cleanliness of her home in peril. Her yarn stashes are havens for generations of moths. White Sun - Wisdom of Life

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Teow Aun Chew To be able to realize our own ignorance is to be wise. Some people say that they know a lot and they are good at poetry, literature and art. But the wise may say, in fact they know is just a smattering of everything. I have met people in the spiritual field claiming that there is nothing to learn in Tao. The sage does not have this fault because he steers clear of such a fault and he knows he can never stop learning. My Heavenly Master said, “Being in the midst of the heavens and the earth, Man must not regard oneself as unsurpassed and superior to others, or consider oneself as the center of everything. This is the so-called: There are heavens exterior to a heaven; there are Men exterior to a man. You should understand that you are just a grain in a vast sea, just a grain of sand. Then, within this sand-territory of the Ganges (the entire universe), the roles that you must play are just a matter of several decades. When you have finished with singing this opera, where are you moving house again? This is uncertain. You must be far-sighted, be very sure that you don’t get attached to the beautiful scenes before your eyes and that year after year, you spend the time only in serving your own interests; only serving your own happiness! Take a look at your national heroes, the idols within your hearts. These heroes could be so peerless in their martial skills and become everyone’s idols. They can make so many people fall with one kick. But could they conquer ‘impermanence’? No, they couldn’t. Instead, they were fallen by just a gentle kick from impermanence. Hence, no matter how adaptable people are; no matter how high and unsurpassed their wisdom is, they cannot fight against a gentle blow from the impermanence. When ‘Yama’ (underworld guardian angel) sends the blank paper over (issue an order), mustn’t people let go what their hands have grasped and leave the human world?” Nobody can escape old age, sickness and death. Let’s think about this: How many happy events are there in this life? The most anxious thing for people is just hunger and cold. Even if one wears silk, drinks fine wine, tastes exotic food everyday and lives in mansion, the flesh cannot stay unwithered for a hundred years. The wealth and nobility of life is actually a dream. People are entangled by many things in the world; and these entanglements are all invited by oneself. Everyone of us must go through the sour, sweet, bitter and spicy parts of life. Human existence in the world has more suffering than joy. To put an end to this suffering, we must make contributions and build our virtues. Only with true merits and honest repentance can Heaven offer true help. Make the journey of life a meaningful one and let’s see a poem by my Heavenly Master JiGong; “Reconize the directions clearly. Turn the steering wheel on seeing the wind (grip opportunities). Rebuild a new life and seek the Root. Throw away and let go all greed, anger, ignorance and blind love and passion. To the ones with affinity, the Saints and Worthies are beckoning from afar. Do encourage yourself and do cultivate with haste.” Wisdom of life is to reconize ourselves, who we are and why we are here. In this land of endurance there is a great heap of defects and frustrations. We have a choice and don’t live without choices. Humble ourselves and learn the way to liberation of life. Use the false self (body) to save the true self (soul). Let go of all attachments and don’t crave for fame and wealth. Free ourselves from greed and worries and if we are willing to adapt to all conditions, a bitter gall-bladder can turn into a sweet spring; if we can transform the situations, a thatched cottage can be an elegant mansion too. Author: T.A Chew T.A Chew, till now has been living a simple life and his small little house temple is like a mansion with a beautiful willow tree. If ever he has to build a great mansion, it would be a great temple for all to come together to study and practise Tao. Adirondack Chairs - How to Choose One

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Jennifer Akre In Blue Mountain Lake, New York, you will find a unique museum called the Adirondack Museum. According to the experts that run this museum, the Adirondack chair was originally called the Westport chair, named after a small town located nearby Adirondack Mountains. The design of the chair was first created back in 1900 by Thomas Lee. On a mission of designing a chair that could be used indoors or outdoors and one that was overly comfortable, he began his work, using standard boards and nails. After creating his prototype, he asked family and friends to see what they thought and while the Adirondack chair does not look like the most comfortable choice of chairs, they were surprised that it was actually quite comfy. Today, the Adirondack chair remains a popular choice often associated with beachfront houses, big sprawling lawns, or screened patios. However, the Adirondack chair makes a wonderful addition to any home or yard. The style of slated boards and the big wide armrest are what made Adirondack chairs well known and that style remains popular today. The armrest is especially nice in that it is wide and angled so you can easily set down a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade while relaxing in the shade. The patent for the Adirondack chair was provided in 1904 and over the following 20 years, the manufacturer made several variations of this one style. The nice thing about choosing an Adirondack chair is that again, they are extremely comfortable and for the quality and efficiency, very affordable. Most Adirondack chairs are natural wood or painted white but more and more, new colors are coming available. You can also choose from the basic Adirondack chair or go with an Adirondack lounge chair that reclines easily or even a double Adirondack chair, perfect for cuddling with someone special. If you love spending time outdoors or indoors, you will need to make sure you have a good, comfortable chair, which is exactly what you will get from an Adirondack chair. This particular chair is often handcrafted, providing a one-of-a-kind country look. The Adirondack chair adds a real touch of class. The curved back design and seat are made to wrap around the body, something you just do not get with any other type chair. The standard Adirondack chair measures 32 1/4-inches wide and 38 1/4-inches deep, and 35-inches high. Although the price of a standard Adirondack chair will vary from one maker to another, typically a price tag of $250 would be considered reasonable. Best of all, the Adirondack chair will last years and years if taken care of properly.
